SHUT IT Hinges: What is the Yoke and What is the Body?

Simple Hinge Diagram

When looking at a SHUT IT brand hinge, the Body will always be the large block-shaped piece of metal in the center of the hinge. This is the part of the hinge that actually connects directly to the gate and is what allows it to rotate. Meanwhile, the Yoke is everything surrounding the Body including the Hinge Bolt, Washer(s), Sealed Bearings, Nut for Hinge Bolt, and the Bolt or Weld-On bracket if applicable. Basically, if it's one of the non-moving parts, it's part of the Yoke.

SHUT IT Hinge Breakdown

  • Yoke: The Yoke, in this case, refers to the entire hinge unit excluding the Body.

  • Body: The Body is the main moving mechanism in a hinge that rotates and attaches to the gate upright.

  • Hinge Bolt: The Hinge Bolt is what holds the Body in place and allows it to rotate freely without too much friction.

  • Bracket: The Bracket is what attaches to the Gate Post and is typically either Bolted or Welded on. (Bolt-On shown in diagram)

  • Sealed Bearings: The Sealed Bearings allow a smooth rotation of the Body while also keeping it in place.

  • Nut for Hinge Bolt: The Nut for the Hinge Bolt is what locks it in place so the Bolt doesn't rotate.

  • Washer: The Washers ensure not too much strain is put onto the Yoke.
